Chess Table Design and Build

Well I’ve started to design a chess table that I’m entering in a competition on UKWorkshop. I’m happy with the actual table top which incorporates a drawer but I’m undecided with the first draft for the legs. I might remove the cross brace and add stretchers or rails just a little lower than the top rails.

Here’s a pic showing the drawer open.

The materials planned are American Black Walnut because it’s got to match existing furniture and I’ve got several planks that have been stored in the house for months, so no problems with it acclimatising. The lighter squares will be sycamore, and sycamore & ebony inlaid stringing.

Here in the Mk 10 version I’ve added Ebony stringing and Sycamore around the actual chess squares to see what it looks like.

No doubt the will be a Mk 11 coming to this screen soon

So here it is the Mk 11, with new rails instead of the cross braces.

Yes I think I like it better than the Mk 10.

To give some idea of the size here’s a pic with some measurements.

Yes it’s only small, but big enough to be used as a coffee table should the need arise.

I’m Twelve Years Old Today

I’m twelve years old today the 24th April, my mummy’s name was “Velvet
Gun’s ‘n Roses of Culnor” my proper name is “Lace,n Gold of Culnor” I
and my mummy were bred by Lucie Stevenson from Barnstable in Devon. I
now live in retirement in Cornwall.
Today as it’s my birthday I’m allowed to get wood shaving all over me
as I love to keep an eye on my dad as he makes a mess in his
workshop

Tonight I’ve been promised a chocolate cup cake…… Hmmmm!

Kitchen Remodel

Well the old kitchen cabinets were removed today (Friday) but work started on Wednesday with removing all the floor tiles, it took two of us all day and in the end it resulted in using a kango hammer to remove them We also removed the tiles in our cloak room which is adjoining the kitchen these became almost impossible to remove and in the end we had to take the whole floor up and relay a new floor.

Tomorrow I have to cover the whole floor with some 6mm ply and on Monday the fitters are back to fit all the cabinets.

A new sub base is down including the cloak room, it won’t get tiled until the kitchen is fitted.

More Days In A Week

When I retired I thought I would have all the time in the world to do things, it ain’t so.
With an impending new kitchen looming up and my boat decks that need scrubbing I’m running out of time, Who invented the seven day week? Why didn’t he make it eight days? The kitchen started with the removal of the Aga

Then we removed all the inset ceiling lights and got that replastered and painted

We’ve still got the new light to fit

The Aga has been totally renovated with all new internal parts and the blue enamel that was blue is now black.

Before the kitchen arrives I have to get the tiles up off the floor and lay a new covering of plywood, I’m off later today to get the plywood from Plymouth, I could have bought it local but I found I can save at least 30% from a stockist in Plymouth. I said I’ll fetch it later but we’re waiting for a delivery of kerosene to be delivered and swmbo wants to go shopping in Plymouth

and I’ve still got to scrub the boat decks…..

Tomorrow I’ve got to go to Salcombe to pick up a machine I bought on Ebay and swmbo wants to come so she can shop in Salcombe

the grass needs cutting, all the upvc weatherboarding, guttering and down pipes need washing.

The car need de-dogging and all the rubbish cleaned out, I’ll need an empty dustbin before I can do that.
I also need to clear room in my workshop to make room to store the new kitchen cupboards before they get fitted.

I could go on and on but I ain’t got time, I’ll go and see what I can add to the ten year plan Oh why ain’t there eight days a week like the Beatles sang

Swmbo say’s “I could have done half of the jobs if I hadn’t been playing making clamp racks” with the emphasis on playing She’s just added “What ten year plan, more like twenty” Sarcastic sod…… Ouch!

Well as they say in Cornwall “I’ll do it Dreckly” which means in English “Manyana with out the urgency”

Mobile Clamp Stand

Well I had half a sheet of 1/2″ ply given me so I decided to free up some wall space and make a clamp stand, I really didn’t think it would be so heavy loaded up and I think I should have got bigger castors.

Some mods

Just an update on mods to the clamp rack, I’ve now glued and screwed a couple of braces as seen in these pics.

It’s now rock solid, no wobbly movement at all.

Two special planes for sale

I’m buying a Jet 22-44 and to help fund it I’ve decided to sell two very special planes none of which have ever been used.

I’m looking for £150 but I’m open to offers.

A bronze plated Stanley 92 with spare blade

I want £80 but again I’m open to offers and highest offer will get it even if it don’t reach what I want.

Remember both planes have never been used. They are in mint condition.
